ANDRAEMO is what Christian Sprenger calls the driving force of his winery, Terra Nera. The name comes from the lead and favorite horse of the most successful charioteer of antiquity, Flavius Scorpus, who is also immortalized on one of the winery’s labels.

Why this fascination with the Roman Formula 1? Well, even back then, people recognized the uniqueness of this remote corner of the Maremma for producing high-quality wine.
And in the Middle Ages, the dark wine from Terra Nera, the rare black slate, was also highly valued.
But in recent decades, that knowledge had been forgotten — until a quality-obsessed, stubborn Bavarian came along and, through painstaking work, brought new life back to these precious soils.

Our entry-level wine ANDRAEMO received 92 and 93 points from Falstaff.
What the experts say: Spicy aromas, with autumn leaves, forest floor, light and dark berries, rosehip, ethereal notes, rosemary and pine needles. Juicy on the palate with elegant freshness and power, mealy tannins, fruity and savoury notes, intense and long finish. Definite ageing potential for many years to come.

AURONERA 2021 was awarded 93+ points.
What the experts say: On the nose, fruit notes paired with savouriness, dark cherries, wild berries, plums, dried herbs, thyme, sage, bay leaf and dark chocolate. Powerful body, with warming alcohol, balanced by fresh fruit and dense extract, ethereal, fine-grained tannins and lively, well-integrated acidity give structure and length to the soft and supple components.

SCORPUS 2019 was awarded 94+ points.
Smoke on the nose, dark chocolate, After Eight, roasted hazelnut, clove, cherry, plum, berries, lilac berry juice, dried herbs. Powerful and fresh on the palate, fine silky tannins and well-integrated acidity give structure to the juicy fruit, soft, supple base, versatile at the table.

AURONERA classic was awarded 94+ points by Falstaff.
What the experts say: On the nose cinnamon and milk chocolate, cocoa bean, elderberry juice, dark cherry and thyme, menthol. In the mouth a dense, firm tannin makes powerful pressure, the wine has a long lasting plateau phase that brings together tension and concentration at a high level and hints at excellent aging potential. Young blood! And not saturating.

Connoisseurs and experts of the Süddeutsche Zeitung chose our wine as SZ-Rotwein of the year. The exclusive cuvée “Ardesia Nera” combines notes of berries, chocolate and smoke to a completely unique taste experience.

SCORPUS received a gold medal of the Berliner Wine Trophy.

Berliner Wine Trophy the World’s Largest OIV Wine Competition. Since the patronage of the OIV in 2004, the Berliner Wine Trophy has become the world’s largest wine competition and Germany’s most important international wine challenge.

AURONERA and SCORPUS were awarded 93+ and 92 points, respectively, as Fallstaff Favourites .

To be considered as a Falstaff Favourite, a wine must be of a select top class. The minimum number of points required for the award is 92 out of 100, making the wine one of the very best of its kind. In this luxury category, the wine price has no upper limit.

SCORPUS was awarded a silver medal for Italy of Mundus Vini.

Mundus Vini is one of the most important international wine competitions annually, taking place in Germany.  It was founded by the publishing house Meininger Verlag with the aim of promoting the quality and marketing of the registered wines.
Oenologists and wine experts evaluate the products by blindly sampling them and awarding the grade according to the international 100-point system of the International Wine Organization (OIV), which is also recognized by the Union Internationale des Oenologues (UIOE).

Paula Bosch was the first female sommelière in star gastronomy. She evaluated our wines. “Repeated tank and barrel samples, vintage 2015 Terra Nera, Maremma, Tuscany, provides both nasal and olfactory properties that are unique to these wines and terrain. I have been convinced of this since the first tasting.  These wines are even more flavourful, with a hard to define iron ore note, a certain terroir note, and also slate tones that I know from the Moselle with the red wines from Pinot Noir.  These characteristics are remarkable and, for me, concise and clear to recognize in the wines of Terra Nera.” (Paula Bosch, 2016)
